Here’s a debut disc by a guy who shows lots of promise. Pianist Luke Celenza is a Michel Camilo-influenced artist, which is hard to gripe about, and this disc has him in a trio and quartet context with Joshua Crumbly/b, Jimmy MacBride/dr and Lucas Pino/sax. He has a boppish bounce to his touch, as evidenced on material like “Mars” and “Blues” as well as a post modern intellectualism on a trio piece like “Three Point Five.” With Pino on tenor, there is some intricate interplay with some split second timing on “River Rhodes” and a moody “Back and Forth Prelude,” as well as some multihued shifting moods and grooves on “Back and Forth.” Brainy and brawny material in abundance here.
