John Vanore is always guaranteed to put out a release that sounds fresh and challenging, yet still able to have something for you to hold on to. The trumpeter/composer leads a large ensemble here which he wants to serve more as a framework for the soloists, which include Bob Howell/ts-ss, Greg Kettinger/g and himself as the most frequent. A fascinating read of “Footprints” highlights Howell’s thick tenor, while a panoramic “Whispers of Spring” includes some fresh ruminations from pianist Ron Thomas. The harmonies are at their zenith on the attractive homage to Spanish music in the form of “Mompou” which once again includes Howell’s tenor in an intriguing frame. Never a moment of standing on your heals with this leader!
