If you don’t know where to go after you’ve worn out your John Coltrane discs, take a listen over here with tenor saxist Chris Alpiar. He leads a quartet with Pete Rende/p, Matt Pavolka/b and Bob Meyer/dr through a handful of original material that could well pass for some lost Impulse! sessions. “Welcome (Peace for the Earth) is 15 minutes of fiery passion that could easily have been on A Love Supreme, with Alpiar’s yearning tenor calling out to the sky. The 19 minute “Trane’s Pain” includes some thunderous piano work by Rende, while the rhythm section hangs on by a thread. Exciting music all around as Alpiar’s acorn does not fall far from Trane’s tree.
