Brothers Adam/tp and Zack/dr lead a sextet with Livio Almeida/ts, Gabe Schnider/g, Adam Kromelow/p and Raviv Markovitz/b that emphasizes post bop modernism. Most of the tunes are composed by the trumpeter, and material like “Drive,” “Mind Troubles” and “Full Measure” are filled with sophisticated melod
ies and intriguing harmonies. Except for “Full Measure” and Billy Strayhorn’s “UMMG” the tunes tend to keep away from the waters of swing and lean more on edgy complexity. Adam’s trumpet glows on “Sensations’ and Kromelow’s piano sounds wondrous on the dark “Action and Reaction” but most of the time, the total isn’t as satisfying as the parts themselves.
