This album by the trio Myriad3 tells you volumes about the influence of Brad Mehldau and the wake of his music. Since the days of bebop, trios have either been things like the Bud Powell influenced “Mow, Blow and Go” where everyone got a chance to deliver a long sprawling and exciting solo. Mehldau came along and brought the interplay of a Bill Evans to a new plateau, with the musicians conversing in a simpatico fashion over originals.
The team of Chris Donnelly/p, Dan Forlin/b and Ernestio Cervini display amazingly nimble and swift dynamics on their material such as “Myriad” and “Fractured” with the music changing tempos and themes at an inspiring rate. What they do as well is let the accents in the rhythms become the melody in itself as on “For The D reamers” and “But Still and Yet.” Yes, they can handle the basics, as Forlin’s bass resonates on “C Jam Blues” and “Tell,” but the emphasis here is multi-textured hues and percussions, with dynamics changing like the volume of a party. Intricate, intense and deeply thought out, this music mixes moments of free form excursions with slide rule concision.
