Essentially, you’re not officially an Angeleno unless you’ve seen Poncho Sanchez in concert. The East LA icon is a living landmark, as much as Tito’s Tacos or Tommy’s Burgers. This cd finds the conga king in his natural environment, and outdoor concert at the corner of Hollywood and Vine, and he leads his caliente team of 9 compadres through a mix of cruising low rider music to classic latin jazz. Of the latter, a take of “On Green Dolphin Street” sizzles like onions and peppers, while “Promenade” and the “Poncho Sanchez Medley” will get you forming a salsa line in no time. A riveting take of “Afro Blue” is penetrating and rich, while the party ends with a celebratory “Son Son Charari.” Some vocals by George Dez ad to the mix of Francisco Torres’ patented arrangements and Rob Bardt’s woodwinds, making this a hot plate with every seasoning you could desire. Load up and eat!
