Back in 1976, an obscure but respected rock/blues guitarist named Peter Frampton put out a two disc set of a typical concert of his own well conceived compositions. Somehow, God’s grace shined on the young man, and the album sold like hot dogs at Pinks that year, making Frampton an “overnight sensation” after years paying his dues on the road. This two dvd set catches the chipper Les Paul guitarist still joyfully rocking after all these years, with a stellar band, displaying what it takes to keep a career together: good material, good technique and a winsome attitude.
The first disc is basically a return to all of the songs on the platinum selling album, and the music actually sound better after almost two score years. Frampton sounds comfortable with himself, and the material like “Somethin’s Happening” and “All I Wanna Be” are as optimistic as the 70s could ever be. The second set has him doing some more recent material, as well as delving into his Humble Pie days. A take of “I Don’t Need No Doctor” with his son Julian is a kick, while the take of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” shows the six stringer at his best. Class all the way here.
