Joel Behrman: Steppin’ Back

Here’s a trumpet  player with a heart of gold. Joel Behrman fronts a quartet here with Matt Clark/p, Marchus shelb/b and Howard Wiley/dr and an occasional added front line of Dayna Stephens/ts and Danny Armstrong/tb. On his own, he has a rich and warm tone, and he uses it glowingly on “I Cover the Waterfront” and “Mood to be Wooed.” With the added horns, he creates a sound that is not dissimilar to Herbie Hancock’s Speak Like a Child; fresh, light and frothy. “The Faithful Hussar” and the three part “Justice Suite” use the three winds like rococo frames around percussion, piano and bass musings, while the obliquely hip reading of “Inner Urge” gives off some autumnal and chestnut tones. Creative and intriguing.
