Andy Hunter: Think Like a Mountain

Trombonist Andy Hunter leads a cooking little post bop sextet with some interesting front line sounds with Alex Sipiagin/tp, Jason Marshall/bs, Dave Kikoski/Rhodes, Boris Kozlov/b and Danny Fischer/dr. Except for a couple standards, all of the material is penned by Hunter, and the feel has a nice earthy drive to it. The mix of trombone, trumpet and bari sax make for some great textures as on the brooding and elegiac “Deed By Delusion” and title track. “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” features a molasses rich solo by Marshall, while the rhythm section percolates on the mood shifting “What Is This Thing Called Love?”. Hunter’s trumpet floats like a cloud on the ruminating “Astringent” while the whole band gets into a Headhunters mood on the funky “Ambersand Band.”  Well conceived charts for the ears, and nice cruising for the feet.
