Here’s a real impressive disc by a lady I’ve never heard before. Andrea Brachfeld plays an assortment of flutes here, sings on one of the tracks, and composes a few others. Meanwhile with a foundational team of Bill O’Connell-Bob Quaranta/p, Andy Eulau/b and Kim Plainfield/dr, she scorches through some hot post bop material that sounds like the next logical step of albums like Maiden Voyage. In fact, along with a series of guest horns that includes Wallace Roney, Yasek Manzano, Todd Bashore and Wycliffe Gordon, she cooks like a five star chef on “Eye of the Hurricane” and Freddie Hubbard’s “Birdlike.” She can also go soft and fluffy as on her duet with O’Connell on “I Got It Bad,” and her own material like “Bebop Hanna” jumps out like bloodhounds in a Louisiana hunt. This disc bubbles with excitement-look for it, and get her for a local gig!
