Reggie Quinerly: Music Inspired by Freedman Town

Here’s a new guy on the block with a fresh and interesting sound: drummer Reggie Quinerly. Here, he links up with a hot band of Tim Wakefield/ts, Mike Moreno/g, Gerald Clayton/p, Vicente Archer/b and a selection of cameo horns on a collection of originals sans a nice little take of “Sentimental Journey” that closes the disc. The centerpieces here are an instrumental and vocal tune dedicated to a town in Texas that was essentially created by American blacks to set up their own independent life, but not in a separatist way. Intriguing story, and the music that accompanies it, such as the hep and shuffling “#13 A Corner View…” sauntering down the street “Fenster”  have a nice saunter to them. Wakefield’s horn is molasses thick, while Quinerly’s got the bebopping groove in  his dna. Nice modern music with a social statement worth hearing about.
