Father and son combo Jose Negroni/p and Nomar Negroni/dr form two thirds of a trio with bassist Josh Allen on this collection of impressive (mostly) originals. The thing that wins you over on this disc is that each of the songs have such a strong compositional feel that the solos seem to be a wholistic part of the entire piece. The interplay between father and son on a tune like the title track or “Blue Forrest” is as exciting as watching an Olympic ping pong tournament. Saxist Dr. Ed Calle brings his tenor and soprano saxes to add a bit of linear melody, which works well on “Matices” and “Looking for You,” while the inclusion of violinist Federico Britos gives a bit of a gypsy feel on the warm closer “Retrospection.” Lots of sparks fly on this muscular session
