Michael Formanek: Small Places

This is bassist Michael Formanek’s second release as a leader, after having an impressive career as a sideman for the likes of Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and Lee Konitz. Here, he employs the left of center altoist Tim Berne along with Craig Taborn/p and Gerald Cleaver/dr-perc and uses them to their best in terms of teamwork on this collection of originals.

Intricate melodies and tricky rhythms are the call of the day here, with mellow by sophisticated ballads like “Slightly Off Axis” and the more aggressive “Pong.” Berne delivers a mouthful on the agonizing and voluminous “Parting Ways” which has an opus magnum type sound, delivery and encapsulation. Formanek is also able to display his prowess at developing and keeping an incessant groove as on the closing “Soft Reality.” Thoughtful, cerebral  and professional, but without sterility.
