Bassist Marc Johnson is best known for his work with Bill Evans’ last trio. His work here with Eliane Elias on the mix of trio sessions (with Drummer Joey Baron) gives audio reminiscences throughout. Elias’ touch has that romantic classicism that seems to bring out the creative genius of Johnson, as he weaves, bows and picks around her fingers like a master tailor, as on the title track. Joe Lovano brings in his tenor for a handful of the songs, and can be gentle and cagey (“It’s Time”)smoky (“Midnight Blue”) or nostalgic (“Moments”). The moods created by the interplay between these greats is like watching masters at Bridge. You can tell some great things are going on, even if you don’t understand it all.
