Brandi Disterheft plays bass and sings through this collection of originals and standards with jazz cognoscenti Sean Jones/tp, Vincent Herring/as, Anne Drummond/fl, Renee Rosnes/p and Gregory Hutchinson/dr. While the cast would seem to point to some promising and exciting jazz, Ms Disterheft spends most of the time trying to sound like an indie-noir band. She shows some impressive form on her solo take of “The Man I Love” and swings pretty hard wit “Compared to What”, but she falls a bit flat on “Portait of Duke.” Her voice is a bit melancholy and introspective, and she spends a lot of time trying to sound a bit too cute, with “Open” and “Blues for Nelson Mandela” coming across less coy than cloying.
