Matt Garrison: Blood Songs

New York based saxophonist Matt Garrison has a nice beefy sound on this collection of post bop original, sans one standard. He leads a hard hitting team of Greg Gisbert/tp, Michael Dease/tb, Roy Assaf/p, Dezron Douglas/b, Ulysses Owens Jr/dr through some well textured cookers like the bossa nova “Force” as well as the delightful “Mom’s Song.” Some exciting sparks fly on “Hospital Room Blues” which shows some muscle flexing, while “The Madness” within is benefited by the addition of some funky guitar playing by Dave Kain. Well arranged material, no Moe, Blow and Go gardeners here; they trim all the edges!
