Rhythm Meister Bobby Sanabria not only plays just about everything that makes sound in a Pier One Imports store, but he brings in about 4 other percussionists to his oversized big band for some exciting music. Some of it, like “The French Connection” and “Wordsworth Ho!!!” have some adventurous and outside excursions, with some soloing by Danny Rivera/bare, Peter Brainin/sax and Chris Washburne/tb clearing the courtroom. An intriguing take of Wayne Shorter’s “Speak No Evil” mixes luxurious harmonies and rhythms, while a thirteen minute Ellington medley has some raucous moments on “The Mooche” as well as romantic interludes on “Prelude to a Kiss.” If it’s extroversion that you want, go no further than the “100 Years of Mario Bauza” that will get you dancing on the table within eight bars. Fun and frolicking.
