Big Bad Voodoo Daddy: Rattle Them Bones

This is the kind of music that initially got me hooked on jazz many moons ago. The jump/swing of guys like Louis Jordan or Cab Calloway had such an infectious feel that it was as easy switching to this stuff from rock as it was when you find the right girl to marry when you’re just generic dating. Lead by vocalist/guitarist Scotty Morris, the BBVD hops, skips and jumps through a hep set of originals as well as some vintage stomps, as well as a ringer or two. Morris’ own “Still In The Mood” “She’s Always Right” and “Why Me?” capture the simplicity of the music and attitude: danceable groove with a simple story of too many or not enough women. He can also go bel canto, as on “It Took Only A Kiss” with Meaghan Smith. The hot horn section is searing, as on “Diga Diga Doo,” and the inclusion of Randy Newman’s “It’s Lonely At The Top” was a first rate call from left field. If you want music for MENSA, keep going, if you want to remember why you enjoy music, go no further.
