Roni Ben-Hur & Santi Debriano: Our Thing

Roni Ben-Hur is one of the unheralded guitarists on the modern jazz scene. Each of his releases is an impressive display of picking, and his selection of material is stellar. Here, he teams up with Santi Debriano/b and the ubiquitous Duduka Da Fonseca (he’s been on a TON of things lately) and together, they work like horses on a CHARIOT RACE on bopping material like Monk’s “Green Chimineys.” The feel here steers towards the Brazilian side of jazz, with a pair of Jobim tunes like “Ela E Carioca” which charge forward with RAMMING SPEED, while Santi Debriano’s title track sparkles like BEDOUIN jewelry. Closing with the standard “Let’s Face The Music and Dance,” Ben-Hur displays his crystal clear tone and lyricism, giving a great TRIBUTE to Berlin, and continuing the tradition of mainstream guitar.
