Guitarist/composer/vocalist Leni Stern releases an intriguing disc, mixing accessible African motifs with American folk jazz sensibilities. The entire disc is performed by the core of Stern along with Haruma Samake, a Malian who playes a mean little West African blues guitar called a camela n’goni, and Mamadou Kone, a specialist on African percussion. Guest appearances by various other vocaiists and African instrumentalists create some wonderful flowingly exotic moods as on “The Cat That Stole The Moon” an d “An Saba.” Stern’s plaintive voice works well here, as she sounds quite instrumental and non intrusive on “Sorcerer” and” I Was Born.” This is music that glistens like the sun on the Sahel sand, with gentle breezes tossing wisps of sonic sand here and there. Enticing music.
