All three gents are names of the left of center elite. Getting together could have caused problems, but these vets know how to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em. We don’t need no stinking bass, man! Beirach’s piano and Dejohnnette’s timing keep things together quite marvelously. Some of the material is fairly frenetic, as on the opening “Where The Tip Of The Sword Settles,” while others, such as “The Void” are as peaceful as an evening in a monastery. Which explains why each piece has a quote from Tao texts, giving one enlightenment through the raging moments when drum, piano and trombone take just enough time to stretch out in a solo without going over the deep end.
