Though he passed away to meet his Savior in 2010, pianist Hank Jones, as the Bible says, still serves as an example from the grave, with his wonderful catalogue of material, as well as this last recording session with bassist Charlie Haden. Back in 1995, they collaborated for one of my all time favorite sessions, Steal Away, which is a collection of spirituals. This one is a worthy follow-up, with even a couple of Christmas Carols thrown in. Were they thinking of a nativity album? We can only dream.
Jones, who grew up in the church (his father was a deacon), plays hymns like “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” and ‘Blessed Assurance” as if he were weaned on the music. He has a comfortable authority here, peaceful, restful, and yet deep in celebratory declaration. His take of “The Old Rugged Cross” brings back images of small and homey churches, of better times, when people used faith to live. Not like politicians use faith to manipulate others. Haden’s bass is melodic, playing the songs like they are being sung during a recitative. Respectful, meditative, and taking in the mood. Their work on the title track is up there with the best renditions. Great music for getting ready for Church on Sunday, or for thinking about life on Monday.
