Brazilian Trio: Constelacao

The lithe Brazilian Trio consists of Helio Alves/p, Nilson Matta/b and Duduka Da Fonseca/dr, and this release has them adroitly going through an enjoyable hour of originals and covers. A  fair share of Jobim is brought to the table (what’d you expect? Barry Manilow?!?), with more obscure tunes like “O Boto” and “Quebra Pedra” gliding like a kite surfer at Malibu. Alves’ own “Bebe” and Da Fonseca’s “Isabella” both have an inviting warmth to them, and the interplay between all three is like an exciting game of air hockey at times. Alves’ pristine touch is a clear as pinging your fingernail on a porcelain doll, while Matta’s deep and loping lines on a  piece like the title track dances like a celebrant at a wedding. Inviting music!
