Bassist Andrea Veneziani leads a trio with Kenny Werner/p and Ross Pederson/dr that shows the heart of a bopper as well as the mind of an experimenter. A few “free” vignettes are interspersed between some material like “Segment” that mixes the straightahead joy of jazz with some Werner throwing in some Don Pullen-inspired trips into outer space. Other material like the graceful “Mark Rothko” mixes the leader’s rich pizzicato with some flowing melody, while Thelonious Monk’s “Pannonica” is as playful as you’d ever want. Joy abounds with a dash of extra spice on this trio outing.
