Peter Gabriel: Secret World Live

As vocalist Peter Gabriel states in the bonus interview, this ’94 tour was essentially the first time that he returned to his more theatrical presentation of music that he had patented back in his days when Genesis was actually an artsy prog band. Mixing an amazing amalgam of visual and video effects, Gabriel is supported by a like minded team of Tony Levin/b, David Rhodes/g, Manu Katche/dr, Jean Claude Naimro/key, Shankar/violin, Levon Minassian/doudouk and Paula Cole/voc through an ethereal collection of moody musings. Material like “In Your Eyes,” “Come Talk To Me” and “Sledgehammer” are introduced and accentuated by a visual display that literally has to be seen to be believed. Almost like Peter Gabriel meets Les Miserables. Of course, you’ve got “Solsbury Hill,” and some other more obscure pieces, but this is one of the few times that a dvd makes sense. Too bad my speakers don’t allow smoke and fog to come through!
