Here’s a nice tempting treat for fans of post bop jazz. The quintet Human Spirit consists of Thomas Marriott/tp, Mark Taylor/as, Matt Jorgensen/dr, Orrin Evans/p and Essiet essiet/b, and are caught in concert running through 8 originals. The songs are all originals and have a free flowing sound in their melodies not unlike Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage vintage. There’s some urgency to the drive of tunes like “In Unity” or “Pelham Gardens” which is quite exciting, with the former including some nice pungent alto work. The pulsating feel of “Stepford and Son” includes some nice bopping trumpet supplied by Marriott with Essiet’s loping bass carries the soloists on “After Hours.” Everyone stretches out here, but never overstaying their welcome. Nice stuff!
