Hamilton de Holanda Quinteto: Brasilianos 3

One of these days, the world of music fans is going to wake up and discover this wonderful Mandolinist. He’s put out countless releases on Adventure Music, and each one has its own distinct charms. This one has him leading a quintet with Andre Vasconcellos/b, Gabriel Grossi/harmonica, Marcio Bahia/dr and Daniel Santiago/g through nine  pieces composed by the two fret men. The intricate interplay between the 16 strings, alter ego-ed with the caressing wheeze of the harmonica, mixes deft interplay and languid moods, as on “Saudades de Brasilia” and “JK Proibido.” A multi-mooded piece such as “A Marcha dos Candangos” sounds like you’re strolling through various tiny neighborhoods, each with its own personality, while “Saudades do Rio,” with Milton Nascimento’s added vocals, creates an eerie, ethereal and almost liturgical sound to this hauntingly moody atmosphere. Deft musicianship and longing emotions permeate the senses here.
