The ABC & D of Boogie Woogie (with Watts, Waters, Green and Zwingenberger): Live in Paris

IT’S THE BOOGIE MAN!!!

You want fun? You want what jazz, rock, rockabilly and everything else you ever loved really came from? Here it is, pure and unadulterated. I got hooked on this stuff back in the 70s, and it lead me to the love of music that I still have today. Nothing beats me like 8 to the bar, if it’s done right, and this collection is done juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Boogie piano is best done, solo, in piano duos, or in trio form. Here, we’ve got #2, #3 and some quartets with Dave Green’s bass doing a nice job on a few of the tracks. Besides that, it’s Axel Zwingenberger on the 88s, Ben Waters on piano and vocals, and Charlie Watts Rolling along on drums. On this collection of Kansas City rollickers, blues, boogies and originals, the band delivers bona fide toe tapping renditions of “Roll ‘em Pete” and “Route 66” with the latter being as heavy backbeated as you’d ever want. Waters’ voice actually sounds fairly hauntingly like a young Mick Jagger, while Watts delivers some electricity on the hard knocking and dirty socking “More Sympathy for the Drummer.” Deft fingerwork and interplay is evident on the wide range of moods, from deft to dainty to deleterious, and all of it delightful. Give homage to a sound and attitude that hopefully will never become obsolete.
