Neil Welch: Boxwork

I know I sound like one of those people at a modern art museum, but the fact is, my daughters COULD have played this music on the saxophone. This collection of sounds (not “music”) is completely devoid of melody, rhythm and that thing called “listenability.” Burps, chirps, murfles, and various effects that sound like something from a Don Martin cartoon are all you’re going to get here. There’s a girl doing animal sound impersonations on You Tube that is far more interesting. Please, if you want a tenor saxist, try Rollins, Webster, Hawkins. PLEASE! If this is the future of jazz, I’m selling my bonds.
