Jochen Rueckert: Somewhere Meeting Nobody

Drummer Jochen Rueckert leads a quartet with some of the major movers of the new generation of jazzers, namely Mark Turner/ts, Brad Shepik/g and Matt Penman/b. The music while, sophisticated and intellectual, is a bit more cerebral than necessary, with tunes like “The Itch” and Herbie Hancock’s “The Sorcerer” being a bit high on the grey matter. Kurt Rosenwinkel alum Mark Turner’s tenor is drier than Turkey Jerky, with his work on “Buttons” and “To Have And Hold” tricky within the same level of dynamism, while Shepik’s guitar a ice cube of six strings. Dry ice that exudes the contrast of burning cool.
