Jim Snidero: Interface

Jim Snidero’s one of the few guys around nowadays that gets the sound of the alto sax right. Not too bright or whiney, he’s got a nice gutsy tone that never shrills. He’s earned his keep with the likes of Mingus’ Big Band, Sinatra and Jack McDuff, so you know he can project that sucker. Here, he leads a team of Pallu Bollenback/g, Paul Gill/b and McClenty Hunter/dr through a collection of vibrant originals.

His horn burns like a hot plate on tunes like the winding “Viper” and driving “Interface” while he’s able to show his more facile side on something like “Apertivo” and “After The Pain.” The lack of piano makes the music flow like quicksilver, as Bollenback’s guitar lines wind like the Autobahn. A thrilling ride like something on California Adventure. Great stuff.
