Sandy-toned vocalist Jane Scheckter has a nice earthy delivery on this collection of standards and obscurities. Her backup trio of Tedd Firth/p, Jay Leonhart/b and Peter Grant/dr is as sharp as an Italian
suit, and when augmented by guests like Harry Allen/ts, Warren Vache/crnt, Buckty Pizzarelli/g, Aaron Weinstein/violin, the band can get really cooking. Allen adds his bluesy tenor on “The Best Thing For
You,” while Weinstein adds some flavor of Western Swing on a cute version of “I Was A Little Too Lonely.” Scheckter shows some remarkable strenght when she’s left all alone, however, as displayed on her duets with “I Hadn’t Anyone Till You” and “Don’t Let It Get You Down” with Pizzarelli and Leonhart respectively. A fun pairing of voices with Tony DeSare makes “I Didn’t Know About You” a real treat, while a
mysterious “Where Or When “ includes Gil Chimes’ harmonica. Her clever mix of material includes curent material such as John Proulx’s “Stuck In A Dream With Me,” making this a strong mix of tunes. Worth checking out.
