Daniel Jamieson: Daniel Jamieson’s Danjam Orchestra

Canadian composer/saxophonist Daniel Jamieson leads a modern sounding band, with some intriguing charts and forward looking sounds, on this well crafted disc enhanced by the production of Jim McNeely (of Stan Getz fame). Jamieson’s charts on standards like “Alone Together” and “Smile” have hints of Gil Evans and Marie Schneider, with elegant frames of horns and saxes surrounding solos by Alex LoRe/ss and Mat Jodrell/tp. His own compositions, such as the driving “Chance Encounter” or multi-mooded 12 minute opus “Sudden Appearance” have intriguing textures and harmonies, creating a perfect tuft of sound for solos from Eric Miller/tb and Matt Holman/tp. Lots of thought went into these songs, and the reward is in the listening.
