Bela Fleck & the Marcus Roberts Trio: Across The Imaginary Divide

Here’s a session that on paper makes absolutely NO sense. Banjo and jazz trio? But, let me tell ya, this is one of the most enjoyable outings you’re going to hear in awhile . Along with an erudite team of Jason Marsalis/dr and Rodney Jordan/b, Fleck and Marcus make sounds that range from John Ford western themes to Crescent City boogie and strike some sparks in jam sessions in between. Some tunes take a nice easy and lazy stride, such as “I’m Gonna Tell You…” while others such as the title track start off with gentle themes before they pop the clutch and go into an overdrive groove that has the mix of banjo picking and ivory tapping create an ecstatic mix of pizzicato perfection. They both have some fun sparring together as on “Petunia” as well as creating deep lyrical beauty such as during “One Blue Truth” where the artists create sounds like a spring drizzle. My only complaint is that they have no tour dates for the LA area. Can we build a special hall for them?
