It takes a lot of moxie to begin a record with a wordless vocal, but singer Cinzia Spata does that very thing on this eclectic reading of modern jazz material. The opening “Questar” displays Spata’s dexterity and inherent sense of timing and style, as she veers around the snapping team of Bruce Barth/p, Dave Clark/b, Yoron Israel/dr, Ken Cervenka/tp, and George Garzone/ts. Her English readings of tunes like “My Favorite Things” and “Soul Eyes” betray a slight Mediterranean accent which is alluring in its own sweet way. On the Spartan “East Of The Sun” duo with Barth, the intimate atmosphere lends her voice and dialect most seductively. Never Mediterranean I didn’t like!
