Take Love Easy

Vocalist Sophia Milman continues to impress me. Her eponymous debut
recording in 04 had a sweet charm about it, while her sophomore “Make
Someone Happy” from 07 was a strong step forward. I saw her at The Jazz
Bakery awhile back, and she was in great form, going from jazz
standards to “Ochi Chernye” in a heartbeat. Here on her third disc she
continues to grow into an solid singer who has uncanny control of her
voice and emotions.

The disc is heavy on the “love” theme, and she coos convincingly on
Ellington’s title track and the clever reading of Paul Simon’s “50
Ways To Leave Your Lover.” She never reaches too far with her voice,
preferring to purr like a kitten rather than shout like a kvetch. She
shows her intensity by digging deeper into the lyrics of “Day In, Day
Out,” showing her emotions by tone rather than volume. Her take on
“Triste” flows like olive oil dripping over a block of feta cheese,
while “I’m On Fire” sizzles like scarmorza gurgling on a skillet. Her
strongest release yet, and she’s turning into a singer with her own
clever style.
