The Canadian quartet Peripheral Vision consists of Trevor Hogg/ts, Don Scott/g, Michael Herring/b and Nick Fraser/dr. Together, they deliver up some sophisticated post modern sounds that mix head and heart. Scott’s got a cool-toned guitar sound, and he uses it well as he picks away on a rockabilly-styled “Charleston Heston” and the stretched out and laconic “Patina.” Herring’s bass does a lot of the heavy lifting, delivering some nice licks, riffs and grooves on the nifty “Wiretap” and going tarantella on “Neurosis and Everyday Life.” Hogg’s autumnal tenor is thick and palpable, making rich melodies out of “Robbed and Ridiculed” and doing impressive wonders on the melancholy “Cement Watchers.” There are some longer pieces that let the patient rhythms and melodies take their times to express themselves; no one seems in a rush, while the shorter pieces are filled with fun and caffeinated moments.
