While the subtitle to this album is “timeless seasonal songs” but the fact is that these tunes were not composed by Irving Berlin or Franz Gruber but by Rick Lang, who is still with us today. Still, his material is fresh, impressive and he even gives a healthy mix of songs about the Christ Child as well as snow and Christmas presents. The warm and cozy vocals are by Annie Sellick (good call), Jana Mougin Aaron Till and Stephen Mougin as they trade back and forth and even duet together at times. The backing team mixes between New England and Cumberland Gap folk, with fiddle, mandolin and guitars mixing in with piano bass and drums. A soulful instrumental “Soulfall” displays the band’s chops, while Sellick is in peppy voice on “That’s What I Love About Christmas” and earnest on “Where Was Baby Jesus Born?” It feels like the holidays around the piano during “Christmas Every Day of the Year with Mougin and Mougin delivers a Nashville skyline on “Angels From on High.” A nice addition to the Tradition!
