Has Kim Waters really been releasing smooth jazz for 25 years? He still wins with the formula with what I call “get the chicks” music. A bit jazzy, a bit R&B so the lady you’re with will think she’s listening to something more sophisticated than rap or hip hop, and you have enough of your “jazz needs” met so you can both be happy and smooch to the same sounds.
Waters does it right here. His alto is creamy on the sleek “Dreaming of You” and the upbeat “On A Mission” while his vibrato is wide and warm on “Stay Together.” Dana Pope brings her voice to the R&Bish “Anything You Need” and Zendaya wisps with Waters’ alto on “Fireflies.”A nice bass lick livens up “Cruising Round Rock” and some wacka wooka guitars funk up “Go-Go Smooth.” Red or white wine for this one?
