This seems to be the year of the older generation getting their faces back into the music scene. Chick Corea just put out a hot little trio disc with Eddie Gomez and Paul Motian, and now the famed Bill Evans alumnus is caught here leading a sensitive and delicate quintet that delves through seven originals and one standard. The uncommon front line of Tenor/soprano sax (provided by Marco Pignatoro) and flute (ditto Matt Marvuglio) creates a cotton ball softness to the music that is akin to Bill Evans’ piano touch and approach. The remaining rhythm team of Teo Ciavarella/p and Massimo Manzi/dr are delicate and understated, making gentle pieces like “Arianna” and “Why Cry” float like a water lily. The melding of the two woodwinds create a cumulous cloud of pensive delight, with the whole mood of the disc coming off like a subconscious “Blue In Green.” Thoughtful and gracefully swaying.
