****RINGER OF THE WEEK****Thom Douvan: Brother Brother

Guitarist Thom Douvan served music well back when Nixon was in the White House by being a member of the famed Funk Brothers, who were the backup band for the Motown label. This disc, which includes Duncan McMillan/B3, Tony Malfatti/sax, and a rotating team of drummers revisits hits of the 60s and 70s with a wonderfully soulful interpretation. Songs like EWF’s “That’s The Way of the World” and Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” sound absolutely delicious, with McMIllan’s Hammond grooving like a Sunday Morning Service.  Malfatti’s alto is lithe and enticing on the anthematic “What’s Going On” and Douvan’s guitar strums, picks and plucks with a soulful strut. Whether or not you know these songs by heart, or whether or not you sing along with your crackling voice, you’ll still get a big kick out of this disc. Makes you fall in love with The Sound of Young America once again-let’s do some jazz takes of these tunes!
