In retrospect, the Doors were one of the most influential 60s rock bands, mixing jazz, classical and poetry with pop music to create not only a genre of its own, but a mindset as well. This dvd culls together some vintage and rare footage of the quartet. Included are some TV appearances on teen shows like Shebang and American Bandstand as well as some of their own films. Many of the TV shows have the band lip-syncing to tunes such as “Light My Fire” and “Hello I Love You.” The tell-tale sign is that drummer Krieger is usually heard before his hands start using the sticks. Still, there is lots to appreciate here. Rare pieces such as “Roadhouse Blues” and “The Changeling” are welcome additions, while updated productions from the 80s include music videos of “LA Woman “ and “Strange Days.” Some bonus features include the Doors’ famed appearance at the Isle of Wight concert as well as a documentary along with commentary. What comes across mostly is that a) Morrison was an incredibly emotional vocalist and song writer b) the tragedy of his alcoholism, as he looks other worldly so much of the time and c) the darkness of this music. While the sounds are inspiring, the lyrics and visual moods suggest a nihilism and lost world that offers no answers. A little Light could have done these gents a great deal of good, but they reflected and defined the times when people thought you only needed love but forgot about Truth.
