George Thorogood & The Destroyers: Live At Montreux 2013

The music scene used to be filled with white guys playing the blues, but as of 2013, George Thorogood is one of the last guys standing. He’s been slinging that Gibson around for decades, and through musical and cultural styles from disco to punk to indie to rap, Thorogood has kept his eye on the ball, as he shows at this smoking concert at his first visit to Montreux. He’s lined up with Jeff Simon/dr, Bill Blough/b, Jim Suhler/g-v and Buddy Leach/sax and they strut and swagger through a hard hitting and good time mix of originals and blues classics. Wille Dixon gems such as “Tail Dragger” and “Help Me” go down nice and easy while John Lee Hooker’s “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer” is putty in the leader’s hands. His own material such as “Bad to the Bone” and “I Drink Alone” carry on the timeless tradition, and by the time he closes with Elmore James’ “Madison Blues” you’re probably going to need to see a chiropractor for having thrown your neck out of place nodding to the music.
