Charlie Mariano: Seventy

Best known for his post bopping work with Charles Mingus, alto saxist Charlie Marianoin his later years went into a more “world music” route, as this 1993 concert in Europe attests. He mixes and matches with Jasper van’t Hoff-John N Taylor/p, JF Jenny-Clark-Nicolas Fiszman/b, Aldo Romano-Jery Granelli/dr, Dino Saluzzi/acc and Mike Herting/k for a wide variety of moods. There’s a bit of Nuevo Tango on Saluzzi’s “Seva La Murga” while meditative Coltranesque rubatto’s create a mood on “Il Piacere” and they mystical Rabou Abou Kabou with Rabin Abou Khalil’s oud and Ramesh Shotam/s Middle Eastern percussion. Mariano is drop dead gorgeous on “Deep River” and Warm with trumpeter Kenny Wheeler on “Everybody’s Talkin’”, piercingly passionate for “Crystal Bells”. Old boppers never die; they just blow away.
