Misha Tsiganov: Painter of Dreams

Playing piano, Rhodes and synthesizers, Misha Tsiganov uses a wide range of paint brushes on this collection of musical pictures at an exhibition. He brings in heavyweights like Chris Potter/ts-ss, Miguel Zenon/as, Alex Sipiagin/tp, Johnathan Blake/dr, Matt Brewer/b as well as guest vocalist Hiiske Oosterwijk for some extra texture. On piano, Tsiganov has Potter’s soprano and Zenon’s  driving hard over Blake’s fiery sticks on an exotic “Up Journey” while his keyboards creating a floating impressionism for the horns on the pretty “Elusive Dots”. Oosterwijk’s charms are well used, ethereal with the leader’s ivories and keys that are dancing with Blake’s cymbals on the earthy “Painter of Dreams” while coalescing to Sipaigin’s mellifluous flugelhorn for a lyrical “Seeley Street Song”.  Zenon shows his chops as Brewer and Blake go into overdrive as the band digs in deep for a  white knuckler of “Long Ago And Far Away” with the leader using water colors for the gentle and elliptical take of “I Loves You Porgy”.
