Matt Wilson: Good Trouble

Drummer Matt Wilson is one of the few artists that keeps jazz happy. This latest album with Tia Fuller/as, Dawn Clement/p-voc, Jeff Lederer/ts-cl and  Ben Allison/b is a perfect case in point, mixing solid yet frisky jazz with a smile on the face. Wilson leads the chicka boom for Lederer on a bluesy “Albert’s Alley” while Fuller bops till she drips on a bold “RBG”. Clement sets out a Morse Code message on “Fireplace” while Wilson and Allison rumble under Fuller on a hoot of John Denver’s “Sunshine On My Shoulders”. And I’m pretty sure this will be the only album that has an Ornette Coleman tune preceding Mr. Rocky Mountain High, with a quirky rendition of “Feet Music” before, and then Gary Bartz’s bass strummed “Libra” to follow. Who’s bringing the hors d’oeuvres?
