Drummer Mike Melito leads a classic sounding hard bop quintet with Grant Steward/ts, Joe Magnarelli/tp-fh, Jeb Patton/p and Neal Miner/b on a mix of originals and timeless jazz covers. Stewart’s tone and deliver is reminiscent of vintage Hank Mobley, warm and round on the fun bopper of “You Said It” and blowing smoke rings on the intro to “Lush Life”. The horn s dig iin with the leader on “Straight Street” and Mangarelli is particularly warm around Meliteo’s cymbals on the lovely “Blue Key”. The leader drums up a storm on a soulful “Big Red” and sizzles with Miner for the three legged race of “Lock Bop”. Snappy sticks!
