All three known as leaders, bassist Mimi Jones, drummer Matt Wilson and tenor saxist Jeff L ederer record NYC’s Café Bohemia back in 2020 for an enthusiastic gig that gives tribute to late period John Coltrane.
Lederer is in an expressive mood, going freebop with Wilson on “Dewey Spirit” and brooding before crying out on “Leap of Faith”. He sears through “Leap Leap” and even the ballad of “Ghost Town” eventually builds up into a cataclysm. Jones and Wilson dig a deep groove for “The Dream Weaver” and create a hazy rubato for “Gospel Flowers”. The songs stretch out and get intuitive when going into various permutations, making for a white knuckler of a roller coaster ride.
