Dave Keller: You Get What You Give-Duets

Vocalist and guitarist Dave Keller delivers a STAXY soul fest of duets with a collection of rich vocalists on this album dedicated to “racial justice and equity”. While we could talk and hash out a variety of opinions on that issue, there is no disagreement on the irresistible grooves supplied by the Memphis-toned horns and backbeat of most of the material here-it just doesn’t let go! Keller and Annika Chambers are upbeat together on ”One More Tear” with Carly Harvey trading places on the rich “That Thing We Do” while a 60s groove gets funky on “The Kiss I Want” with Katie Henry. Without the horns, the team gets into a barroom rocking groove with Johnny Rawls on “Land of the Lonely” with Trudy Lynn teams up with Ira Friedman’s smoky organ on the gritty “Your Kind of Fool.” There are also a couple intimate meetings, with Keller tapping into his inner Billy Joel with Friedman’s piano on “The Spark” and getting indie-folk with Chad Hollister on voice and cajon for “Make it To Tomorrow” before the album closes out on the Delta with Toussaint St. Negritude on the steel stringed “I’m Gonna Let It Shine”. If nothing else, this lockdown has made musicians get creative for recording, and this one’s a treat.
