The Mariel Bildsten Quintet: Backbone

Warm toned trombonist Mariel Bildsten leads a classy post bop team of Stacy Dillard/ts-ss, Sean Mason/p, Ben Wolfe/b and Evan Sherman/dr through a collection of infectious toe tappers and dreamy atmospheres. The front line of her with Dillard on the tenor is formidable on a muscular read of Horace Silver’s “Ecaroh” and the sizzling salsa read of “The Lamp Is Low” with added percussion by Keisel Jimenez. Bildsten’s horn plunges lower than Kim Kardsashian’s neckline on an old world quartet take of “Mood Indigo” with Wolfe strumming like a jungle bander. Mason and Wolfe lurk around the shadows on “Monaco” and Dillard is breathy while the horns undulate with elan on “Rosita”. The team is relaxed throughout, feeling confident on “The Man That Got Away” with Bildsten sliding with the confidence of Rickey Henderson. Polished brass.
